Ugu District Municipality has furthered its commitment to education for deserving tertiary students by granting over R230 000 worth of bursaries through the Ugu District Municipality Mayoral Bursary Fund.
Yesterday, the District Mayor, Cllr Ntombifikile Gumede awarded three bursaries worth R20 000 each, 17 bursaries worth R10 000 each and one bursary worth just under R5 000 to deserving tertiary students from across the district. These funds are made available to pay for tuition and stationery for the 2016 academic year.
During the award ceremony, the Honourable Mayor, Cllr Gumede emphasized on the importance of local government playing a pivotal role towards building a strong local graduate professional base by providing much needed assistance to deserving students who are studying towards a professional career. “The Municipality is planting a seed towards ensuring an improved level of the graduate professional base in the district. A need was identified to financially assist deserving further their education and become professionals in the near future,” said Mayor Gumede.
The Mayor continued to say, Ugu District Municipality has placed education at the apex of its priorities in moving our District forward and the Mayor’s Bursary Fund is a reflection of this commitment. “Education is a fundamental right and it is truly rewarding for us to be able to assist in furthering these students’ learning through the bursaries we award.”
The Mayor plans for this fund to increase annually for the municipality to increase the number of beneficiaries of this bursary fund every year.
