Ugu District Municipality unveiled its new Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Speaker of Council and member of the Executive Committee at its first statutory meeting at Port Shepstone Civic Centre, yesterday, 24 August 2016.

Cllr Tolomane Mnyayiza was elected as the District Municipality Mayor; Cllr Mondli Chiliza retained his previous position as the Deputy Mayor while Cllr Ntombifikile Gumede was elected as the new Speaker of Council.

Joining this TROIKA as part of the Executive Committee that will lead the district’s service delivery implementing committees are Cllr Ian Mavundla, Cllr Nomfundo Zwane, Cllr Phumlile Mthiyane; Cllr Simphiwe Mthethwa and Cllr Leonard Ngcobo.

The newly elected Ugu Council of a total of 35 councillors will initiate a new era of services delivery for the 2016-2021 term.

The councillors vowed under oath to serve the community and the municipality with honour and transparency and adhere to the task they have been entrusted with to ensure the advancement of service delivery throughout the district.

The new council will ensure continuation of bringing and maintaining the municipal core functions of water and sanitation services and also advance initiatives to continue the fight against the triple challenge of unemployment, poverty and inequality.

The inaugural meeting was graced by numerous dignitaries, new councillors’ family members and the public who came in numbers to witness the momentous meeting. 

Taking the platform for the first time in the capacity of being the district’s first citizen, Mayor Mnyayiza conveyed his appreciation to the past leadership for hard work in improving the lives of the people of the district. He highlighted that as the incoming leadership, they will continue to advance government’s service delivery mandate especially in the core functions of water and sanitation services. “I look forward to a productive service delivery term and I pledge to do everything in our power to further improve this municipality.”

The first council meeting of the new district council will be on Thursday, September 01, 2016 at the Ray Nkonyeni Municipality Council Chambers.
