UGU WINS BIG AT KZN EPWP AT KAMOSO AWARDS
In recognition for excellence in the implementation of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP), Ugu District Municipality recently bagged 10 accolades. This is proof that the EPWP programme meant to better the lives of ordinary communities was ran like a well-oiled machine. The aim of the awards was to award the best performing public bodies in the implementation of the EPWP programme by the Provincial Department of Human Settlements.Out thirty-four (34) categories, Ugu scooped 10, including a clean audit in the overall spending of its grant monies meant for this initiative that seeks to uplift the poor of the poorest. Some of the accolades included best performance and going beyond the call of duty during Covid-19 as well best social, environmental and culture sector, just to name a few. With many communities confronted with poverty and a high unemployment rate, Ugu Special Programmes Unit, has done an outstanding job in ensuring bread is put on the table for many households in the district, whose sons and daughters are employed in the EPWP Programme.Many of them have really improved their home situations, especially after having been incorporated into the Ugu team. The story of Manqoba, whose mother is a domestic worker and whose child is disabled touched many. Manqoba joined the EPWP Programme a couple of years ago and was able to do his driver’s license with the EPWP stipend. He is now employed as a driver and is now able to cater to the needs of his daughter and mother.Apart from Ugu, Ray Nkonyeni walked away with three awards, whilst Umdoni Municipality and Umzumbe Municipalities walked away with one award each.
