Major maintenance work for Umthamvuna supply network
As a water authority in the district, our key focus continues to be that of accelerating service delivery of water and sanitation services to our communities. And in adherence to this mandate, the Municipality will be undertaking a 30-hour shutdown of the Umthamvuna Water Treatment Works on 5 to 6 February 2019 to conduct preventative maintenance as a drive to ensure security of supply and avert any future major water outages due to equipment breakdowns.The current status quo of this supply network which reveals a demand outweighs production thus resulting in the storage dam to operate on a fill and draw configuration; shutdown work is to ensure that the current available supply is not affected. It is also a well documented fact that during peak season periods, this network experiences a high demand of water supply which places it under severe strain.The scope of work of this shutdown includes the shutdown of high an low lift pumps, the isolation of the rising main and scour high lift pump delivey line, the removal of a 2.5 ton high lift pump , the removal of the 250mm pipeline bends, removal of faulty a 800 kg 250 mm isolation valve on bank, a pressure test will be conducted on all connections and the high and low lift pumps set start ups and charging of the raising main amongst other maintenance activities.This shutdown will affect normal water supply in the coastal areas fromSouthbroom to Port Edward and the inland areas of KwaNzimakwe, Ezinqoleni, KwaXolo, Gcilima, Thelawayeka, Mvuntshini, Shobamdlanzi, Mbecuka, Florida, Nodalane, Shobeni and Mlozane areas.We are placing a high alert on water conservation during this period. We urge customers to use water very sparingly during this period as full supply restoration is expected 24 hours post shutdown for high lying areas.
