WORK IN PROGRESS TO RE-INSTATE POWER SUPPLY AT UMTAMVUNA WATER SCHEME

As part of the final phase of the project, Eskom initiated a scheduled shutdown at the Umtamvuna Pumpstation to facilitate the connection of a temporary 2.3MVA power supply. This intervention was intended to stabilise and enhance water delivery for both the coastal and inland communities reliant on the Umtamvuna Water Scheme. However, unforeseen technical complications arose during the process, and work is currently ongoing to resolve these issues.

The delay has resulted in significant inconvenience for both the coastal and inland communities, as the primary relief supply filling point is contingent upon the continuous operation of the Umtamvuna plant.

This evening, the Ugu Electromechanical team, in collaboration with the Eskom EC Technical Team, is undertaking the reinstatement of the original power supply to enable the immediate resumption of water production. Concurrently, Eskom will continue with the process of balancing the newly installed additional Eastern Cape supply. The Ugu District Municipality will promptly disseminate updates regarding the restoration of power as soon as the supply has been reinstated.

As form of relief, the municipality has secured additional water tankers, which are scheduled to commence filling at Boboyi on the following day and will begin distributing relief supplies thereafter. It is important to note that the increased distance from Boboyi may result in less frequent service delivery than anticipated. Ward Councillors representing the affected areas will receive the trucks and provide guidance to municipal officials regarding the most effective delivery routes and models.

The situation is undesirable and highly regretted.“We unreservedly  apologise to the affected Amakhosi and the people, to all stakeholders, we remain positive that this situation is at the brink of being resolved. ” stated Mayor, Cllr I. S. Mqadi.
