Umthamvuna Water system in full operation

Umthamvuna Water system in full operation

Over the past weeks’ communities residing south of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality under the Ugu District have endured a prolonged period of intermittent water supply due to major pump failure at the Umthamvuna production station. And following a series effort by the municipality towards getting the plant into full production, we are pleased to advise residents that the pump has been installed and the plant is currently producing water at its full capacity.Restoration and recovery process of the system is currently under strict monitoring  to establish progress of supply in the affected areas. And of yesterday (Tuesday) water supply schemes were starting to pick up and most areas have started receiving water. Port Edward reservoir was sitting at 70% by midday yesterday. And our technicians have confirmed full supply in the following areas: Lower  and Upper Banners Rest; Leisure Bay; Bromsfield; Glenmore; Palm Beach, Trafalgar; San Lameer and Southbroom; KwaNzimakwe; Breamer; Goqoza  and Shobamdlazi. And while the recovery process of the Umthamvuna system is under way, high lying areas of Ndumezulu will still be supplied through static tanks. We have already started with pumping regime  to Izingolweni and KwaXolo areas and their systems are picking up after which supply of water will be restored in no time. With the amount of work being done on the ground, indications are that we will have the  whole system recovery process being concluded before the end of the week after which all areas which were affected will be having full supply. And to prevent reoccurrence of this disastrous situation, the municipality have committed a substantial amount of its budget for the new financial year 2019/20 to maintenance of the existing ageing infrastructure. Process to acquire new standby pumps is underway and our mandatory commitment as a Water Services Authority of providing water and sanitation services shall never be deferred. As the municipality, it is vital that we record our sincere apology to all the residents whom during this period have endured the inconvenience of no water supply. Once again, We do extend our apology to you all.ENDSISSUED BY:UGU DISTRICT MUNICIPALITYFor more information and media queries contact:Senior Manager: Mayoralty and CommunicationsMr France ZamaFrance.Zama@ugu.websitesupport.co.za
