UGU COUNCIL APPOINTS HEAD OF WATER SERVICES AND SANITATION

In a strategic effort to enhance water and sanitation services in the Ugu District, Dr. Thuli Mwelase, a registered Civil Engeneer from Umzumbe has been appointed to head the municipality’s water services and sanitation division, effective from 1 July 2025.

Dr. Mwelase was recommended to the Council,and subsequently approved by the Cogta MEC following a rigorous and legislated selection process. With a distinguished career and a proven track-record within Ugu Municipality Management,  she brings an exceptional level of expertise and a wealth of experience in water services management.

According to the Mayor of Ugu, Councillor Sikhumbuzo Mqadi, Dr. Mwelase will be entrusted with the oversight of water resources management, the delivery of clean water, and the maintenance of sanitation services throughout the District. “We are fully supportive of Dr. Mwelase’s appointment. Her profound expertise and visionary approach to sustainable water management will be invaluable as we strive to enhance our infrastructure and better serve our community,”

Dr. Mwelase expressed her enthusiasm for the role, underscoring a commitment to transparency and community engagement. “I eagerly anticipate collaborating with residents, stakeholders, and the dedicated team at Ugu to address our water and sanitation challenges. Together, we will implement innovative solutions that ensure access to safe and reliable services for all.”

This appointment arrives at a pivotal moment as the municipality contends with increasing water demands due to population growth and climate change challenges. Dr. Mwelase’s focus will be on upgrading aging infrastructure, improving water conservation practices, and enhancing community outreach programs.
