TAKING PARLIAMENT TO THE PEOPLE OF UGU DRAWS TO AN END
The National Council of Provinces recently held public hearings on issues affecting communities in the district, ranging from water and sanitation issues, crime, community safety and social services where thousands of locals attended. The NCOP programme, attended by the President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa, various Ministers, Members of Parliament, MEC’s, Provincial leadership and District Leadership proved how government coordinates a participatory democracy.Explaining the importance of public participation in governance, the honourable President said,” Public Participation in our democracy is not done in a superficial manner. This is evident not only in the substance of the laws that are passe, but also in the manner that laws are considered and debated. Before any law is passed, parliamentary committee invite submissions from the public and hold hearings, often in communities to gather people’s views on proposed legislation.”Speaking at the event, Ugu Mayor, Cllr Phumlile Mthiyane said she was extremely hopeful that an interaction of this nature will bring positive change to our valuable communities and stakeholders whose earnest request is an improved standard of living.“Your effort in ensuring parliament is taken to the ordinary citizens is commendable and most welcome. Not only does it portray Government’s continuous efforts to pursue a better life for all communities in the Ugu District, but it is indeed a true reflection of the African National Congress’ efforts to harness a ‘people oriented’ government.”She continued to say: “Honourable Chair, I stand here, not only as a leader of the district, but as a product of the Valleys and dusty villages of Izingolweni, who clearly understands the plight of an African child having risen from an impoverished background myself.” The Mayor stressed the importance of improving water and sanitation in the District and thanked Water Affairs Minister Senzo Mchunu as well as Cogta MEC Sihle Zikalala for extending their hands towards the district.Community members were given a chance to air their grievances to the national leadership as well as give feedback on policies that affect their daily lives.Become a member of ourFacebookpage by liking the’Ugu District Municipality’page to receive continuous and factual updates on matters concerning service delivery.END!ISSUED BY:UGU DISTRICT MUNICIPALITYFor more information and media queries contact:Acting Municipal SpokespersonMr Mondli NgcoboMondli.Ngcobo@ugu.websitesupport.co.za
